The well-funded campaign against the university—dressed as a defense of rigor—is no ordinary crisis but a coordinated project bent on dismantling the infrastructure of critical scholarship. That knowledge now demands organized resistance, and true rigor carried on: tested against evidence and many vantages, honest about whose interests its standards serve.
Jafari Sinclaire Allen is professor of African American and African Diaspora Studies, at Columbia University, where he is the director of the Institute for Research in African American Studies (IRAAS) and editor-in-chief of Souls: A Critical Journal of Black Politics, Society, and Culture. He is the author of There’s a Disco Ball Between Us: A Theory of Black Gay Life and ¡Venceremos?: The Erotics of Black Self-Making in Cuba, among numerous other works.
